THEY hold some of the most priceless items in the country.

Fire crews were today at Winchester Cathedral and the Great Hall practising drills that could prevent a disaster in the future.

The cathedral holds items including the Winchester Bible that dates back to the 12th century.

A crew from Basingstoke used aerial ladder platforms to reach the top of the famous building, more than 45m high.

Visitors looked on in amazement as the ladders extended in various directions.

Fire fighters invited members of the public over to the fire engine for a closer look and gave brief talks on the equipment being used.

Firemen from Winchester were also in the city, performing drills at the Great Hall.

The medieval building was founded in 1067 and houses a museum of the history of the city, including the Round Table.
