An adorable rare pygmy hippopotamus at a Hampshire zoo has now been named after an online competition.

The calf, born on November 2 at Marwell Zoo, has been named Norbert after receiving 40% of the public vote which closed yesterday (November 29).

Marwell zoo said: "We are delighted to reveal that our new pygmy hippo has been named Norbert following the vote."

The online poll offered a choice between Norbert, Derek, George or Walter after the new arrival was confirmed as a male.

Thousands took part in the competition, with Derek collecting 24%, Walter 19% and George 18%.

Norbert's species is native to West Africa but due to logging and deforestation, they have lost their natural habitat.

The little hippo will now be part of the European Endangered Species Breeding Programme (EEP) at the zoo.

A statement from the zoo said: "Norbert continues to thrive and is enjoying exploring his new surroundings, including his pool where he is gaining more and more confidence in the water."

Norbert has been born to mum Wendy and dad Oliver at the zoo and is the first male of his species to be born at the facility in the last decade.

Claire Mound, Team Leader for Primates and Small Mammals said: "He has quickly learnt how to use his feet and is already jumping around.

"We will continue to monitor the new arrival and start to introduce him to the rest of the enclosure."
