LIFE is all about endings and beginnings, a staple of all newspapers. This week’s Chronicle shows this in abundance.

We wish Caroline Horrill the best of luck in becoming the sixth leader of Winchester City Council in only six years. The Chronicle has warned about the city getting close to becoming ungovernable with the rising tide of sneering cynicism threatening any attempt to improve the city. So we hope that Cllr Horrill will have the skill to steer the authority away from those rocks that have consumed her predecessors.

It would be remiss not to thank Stephen Godfrey for his service over the last 18 months in a thankless job, one to which he brought clear leadership and a sense of purpose.

On a different tack, we can only hope that the abandoned horses dumped by disgraceful persons near Alresford Golf Club will find a suitable home and a happy ending.

Whenever we may complain about democracy in this country we can be grateful that no-one so unsuitable for high office is ever likely to be elected here. Hopefully, we can agree that his term in office will also have a happy conclusion. For all our sakes.
