THE hard work of the Winchester community was recognised by the mayor at her awards ceremony.

Councillor Jane Rutter hosted the Winchester District Community Awards for 2017.

The ceremony at the Guildhall recognised and celebrated the organisations and individuals who give outstanding service to the people and places of the city and its districts.

Cllr Rutter presented around 60 awards, including for the first time a horse on behalf of a local charity.

Each recipient received a certificate and lapel badge and were photographed with the mayor.

Cllr Rutter said: “The aim of these awards is to celebrate the selfless activity that brightens the lives of many residents, and makes our district such a wonderful place in which to live.”

As in previous years, the emphasis was firmly on voluntary action, but there was also scope to pay tribute to those who routinely go above and beyond the call of duty during the course of their paid employment.

Cllr Rutter added: “We know that people really treasure these awards. Our district is fortunate in having such a strong volunteering community.

"Their contribution of time and skills each year provides practical support and companionship for the most vulnerable in our society.

"Volunteers are also the mainstay of most of the sporting, cultural and leisure organisations which enrich our lives and keep us healthy."
