A PUB has raised £8,000 after villagers took on a team of charity rowers over 24 hours.

The Wonston Arms and its locals took on the The Men of Oar last weekend ahead of their Atlantic challenge later this year.

From 12pm on Saturday to 12pm on Sunday, each of the locals did a 14-minute stint on a rowing machine, while The Men of Oar did two-hour shifts, reflective of the rowing schedule they will be doing in the trans-Atlantic race in December.

The fundraiser saw youngsters of 14 years old through to local 86-year-old Ernie Knight chipping in.

Throughout the 24 hours the Pub stayed open and there was always a great amount of support for the rowers. Locals bought in homemade cakes, breakfast bacon sandwiches and fresh fruit.

In total, The Men of Oar amassed 181 miles of rowing, ahead of the 165 miles rowed by the Wonston locals.

The £8,000 raised will go towards Bowel Cancer UK and Combat Stress UK as part of The Men of Oar's £250,000 target.
