Celebrating 100th birthday

A WINCHESTER grandmother celebrated her 100th birthday in style on Wednesday (July 16) as she had tea with the city Mayor, Cllr Michael Read, and received a telegram from The Queen.

Gladys Oram, who is originally from Salisbury, said she was "delighted" about her centenary, although she admitted she was stumped as to the secret of her longevity.

Mrs Oram, who lives at Tegfield Nursing Home in Chilbolton Avenue, grew up in Salisbury and lived next door to one of her teachers from St Mark's School. She remembers with affection her first day at school, when her teacher met her outside the house and held her hand as they walked together.

After leaving school Mrs Oram, who enjoyed dancing and tennis in her youth, worked as a seamstress and met her husband, Horrace Charles Oram, at church in Salisbury in 1932.

Around a year later, they married at the same church where they met and Mrs Oram gave up her job to do voluntary work. At one time she used to hand out library books to sick people in hospital.

The couple moved to Finchley in London in 1948 when Mr Oram was promoted and together they had one son, John Oram, of whom she said she was extremely proud.

When the couple retired they moved to Highcliffe, near Bournemouth, and Mrs Oram was widowed in 1992.

She has lived in Winchester for nearly eight years and has three grandchildren, one of whom lives in Houston in Texas, and has six great-grandchildren.
