Band seeks brass for championships

A HAMPSHIRE band is nearing its fund-raising target to attend the National Brass Band Championships for the first time.

Otterbourne Brass needs to raise £3,500 for the trip to Harrogate in late September, and has collected £2,500 so far.

The band started to raise the money after qualifying earlier this year to represent West of England at the competition.

Band secretary, Michael Davis, who lives in Chilbolton, said: "It's the first time the band has been in the national finals, and we will be one of eight regions taking part.

"We'll be competing in section one, which is the second flight of the contest, a bit like the Championship at football."

He added that the band had never before done so well in a national competition, which included its time known as the City of Winchester Brass.

It now has around 30 members, and its musical director is Lieutenant Colonel Chris Davis, commandant of the Royal Marines School of Music. He also served on the Royal Yacht Britannia.

The group has played two fund-raising concerts already this summer at Otterbourne Village, which were sold out.

The rest of the cash needed will be met through band funds, performance fees, or donations from businesses or individuals.

If you would like to help out, call Mr Davis on 01264 860594.
