A COMMUNITY Speedwatch group has released staggering statistics about the extent of speeding in Overton.

Members of the village’s Speedwatch team said more than 500 cars have been recorded travelling over 35mph within 30mph zones since they began checks in November.

The group, which has targeted various areas around Overton including Kingsclere Road and the B3400, have also recorded over 150 instances of cars driving over 40mph, as well as 15 drivers travelling in excess of 50mph on 30mph roads.

There were also several ‘serial’ offenders, with 25 cars recorded twice and three out of the 500 cars caught three times.

Those caught once or twice will receive a letter from Hampshire Constabulary to inform them of their speed, while those recorded three times will receive a visit from a police officer.

The figures were brought before the attention of Overton Parish Council. Chairman Tom Ridler said: “It seems like a high number, but in comparison to how many vehicles have passed through I think it represents the fact that the majority of drivers drive considerately.”
