ORGANISERS of the annual Overton Firework Night have dubbed the event “the best yet”after they raised over £6,000 in one evening.

Around 1,800 people attended the popular event held last Saturday at Overton Primary School.

Organised by the Overton School Association (OSA), this year’s event featured a 25 minute firework show, a huge 10ft high bonfire and various stalls including a barbecue and bar.

There were also competitions including a ‘Guy’ contest, with five groups entering their homemade Guy Fawkes dolls to be judged before being thrown on the bonfire.

The village’s Brownie group were the overall winners of the competition.

Entries from a recent children’s baking competition were also sold at the event and proved popular on the evening with the winning entries sold out within minutes.

Overall the event raised over £6,000 for the OSA, which consists of 17 parents from the primary school who organise events fundraising events.

The money raised will be used to fund future school projects such as the new school climbing frame, which was paid for by money raised by the OSA.

Current chairperson of the OSA, Debbie Cowley, said of the event: “It was pretty spectacular as an event.

“I was overwhelmed by how many people turned up – It was the biggest one we have had in my time and the most money we have raised.

“We have had a lot of feedback since saying what a great display it was.

“I think for a little school like ours it was overwhelming to see how big an event it ended up being.”

The OSA are now planning for their next fundraising event which will be the Christmas Gift Fair.

The event will take place at the school on December 3.
