AN AMATUER Whitchurch choir may be forced to fold if they cannot find a new musical director.

Ladies choir, ‘Singing for Fun’, are set to lose their current director at the end of this year.

The group, who have been running since 2003, are yet to find a replacement and claim they will not be able to continue if they do not fill the position by January next year.

Committee member Sandra Miller, who has been involved with the group since it started, told the Andover Advertiser: “To be very honest we wouldn’t be able to carry on.

“Some of the choir do not read music so we need someone who can handle that and who can work with a variety of people.”

Asked what that would mean to the group, Mrs Miller said: “I think we would all be devastated.

“It is part of our lives and we do a lot in the community.

“We go into care homes and sing to the elderly at Christmas and this year we have been asked to go carolling with the the Women’s Institute.”

The group was originally formed over 12 years ago as a joint project between the Whitchurch Silk Mill, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council and Testbourne Community School.

The original group later formed into a ladies choir, which today has 26 regular members and meets each Wednesday for practice at the Whitchurch Methodist Church.

Asked what skills they are looking for in a musical director, Mrs Miller added: “We need someone who is committed and obviously we need someone who is interested in music.

“We have developed a lot over the last few years but there is always room from improvement and that is what we all want.”
