CREATIVELY costumed contestants are set to take over Whitchurch this weekend as part of one of the town’s biggest events.

The Great Whitchurch Pub Race, organised by Whitchurch Festival Association, will be taking off on tomorrow at around 3.30pm.

The event is set to start at The Prince Regent and will end at The White Hart at about 8.30pm where awards will be presented for a variety of categories.

This year’s categories include the ‘Most Money Pledged’ trophy, which is awarded to the team that pledges the most money before the race takes place.

Festooned contestants will tour the town in fancy dress stopping off at various pubs and raising money along the way.

Last year 33 teams took part in the race, made up of 175 participants, who helped to raise a total of £3,752.34.

Teams collected charitable donations along the way in buckets, working hard to impress the crowds with dance routines, poses and singing.

Money raised goes towards the cost of the volunteer run event and all else goes towards future community events, such as the annual fireworks display.

One group dressed as a dodgeball team had spontaneous matches along the course, while another dressed as trophies, struck a pose at every stop.
