WHITCHURCH kept its crown at this year’s Rotten Hill Cup charity match.

The event was introduced last year, featuring Whitchurch United taking on Overton United in a friendly charity match.

This year’s match, for the mostly over-40s sides, saw Whitchurch win a thriller 3-2 in Overton.

It was not a case of winning all day for the Jam Boys though, as the Overton under-13s team snatched the first win in the inaugural youth match, clinching victory with a last minute goal to bring the score to 2-1.

One of the organisers, Jo Cowmeadow, said: “It was the first year for the under-13s match, and it went very well.

“Both of the teams are close, with many of the team members playing for the other team on the weekend.

“It was really nice to see, and it got a few more parents involved as well.”

The Rotten Hill Cup started last year after a group of friends werre coming up with ideas to raise money for charity, when the idea of a football match was hit upon.

Jo added: “It is fantastic that it is still going, and we have already booked in again for next year.

“While we didn’t have the weather we did last year, we still had plenty of support from everyone who came to watch and play. We had a good couple of hundred people who came to watch at least.”

As with the previous year, the proceeds that were made from the event will be split among the teams and charities in between the two areas.

This year, 25 per cent of the money will be going to the Kingfisher Day Centre in Laverstoke and another quarter will be given to the Lordsfield Swimming Club in Overton.

The official total has yet to be calculated, but it is estimated to be over £1,800.

Next year’s match will be coming back to Whitchurch on Sunday, 5 May.
