City schools in the red

SOUTHAMPTON City Council bosses have agreed to let seven schools go into the red by nearly £500,000 in total this year.

Top of the budget deficit list is St George Catholic College, which has a planned overdraft of £145,000, and Chamberlayne College of the Arts, which looks like it will be £115,000 in the red.

Meanwhile deficit budgets have also been approved for Redbridge Community School (£61,000), Holy Family Catholic Primary (£65,000), Townhill Infant (£8,000), St Monica Infant (£23,000) and Sinclair Primary (£52,000).

Southampton’s education boss Clive Webster, told Southampton City Council’s Cabinet that deficit budgets were only offered if schools had “robust plans” to get back in balance.

He said: “They reflect in reality that there are fluctuations with pupil numbers and staffing decisions are made in advance of this.”

If the Tory run Council fails to provide sufficient funds for education, schools are bound to go into the red.

Answer to the problem is to provide sufficient funding instead of making the life of head teachers difficult. Also if any religions want to run school they should pay for it. For example Roman Catholic Church is one of the richest institutions, so the Pope should be providing for helping their schools.

Schools were in the red five years ago when the reds were in power. The problem is that funding is being cut- teachers pay increases have to be absorbed into the budgets as do the cost of supply teachers. It's one big BALLS up.

your wrong Chamberlayne College of the Arts and george was not in the red. maybe if some councilers stop paying out £100,000 for spin doctors and channel that money into the schools maybe then they would not be in the red. plus moving little redbridge school on to the old gas works playing field was not needed they could off moved it to the far corner off big redbridge school playing field, this idea is totally this tory council idea, and done all because they want to close down another school (mansel inf/jun) so they can build flats on that school grounds, the torys had all ready butched to other schools in this area from the last time they was in power, newlands and wimpson, even lo the schools are still there they lost a lot off playing field for the schools to building off flats, and i not long learnd that this tory council has there eye on tanners brook playing field.

whats happening is that this tory council is directing money away from areas that it is needed. using state money for private and the few spin doctors, but you will be still paying tax for state own things.

you got a short memory echo reported on one such case. with samuals who employed a spin doctor at cost to the tax payers, ploughing money into the private sector also at the expence of the tax payer.

I'm not laughing at the factual accuracy of what you said. In fact, I didn't even read it. I'm laughing at the fact you answered my joke post as if it were serious. No offence!

Teachers also have families to feed, with prices going up why should they not have a proper pay?

I think you are confusing New Labour with socialists by referring to it as ‘Reds’. As in reality NuLab is well on the right of even Thatcher it should be referred to as ‘Deep Blue’.

Yes June Bridle and her right wing mobsters did not fund the education properly, nor that Tory Blair kept up with what turned out to be a sound bite i.e. Education, education and education. But that is no excuse for current Tory junta’s failure to properly fund the schools.

Hardly surprising ordinary decent people often say ‘they are all the same’.

Well thats typical of webster. Willing to allow schools to go into the red, whilst his own bank account stay £'000s in the black and childrens education falls apart.

He should be sacked, get rid of the t@sser

The schools should stick to its budget. They have accountants to manage their budgets. They should stop wasting money. The other schools managed to stick to their budgets.

schools do not have accountants. In fact, they have ti run on shoestring budgets. Maybe the Echo should ask the council how much money has been topsliced from school budgets when they 'restructured' their departments. Jobs were created wherer they are not needed, and this was funded from money which should have gone directly to schools. 33% of the extended schools budget, which enables schools to provide activities for students after hours was taken to fund this restructuring. So schools are in the red? Not surprised at all by the news. Maybe Clive and his friends should get off their gravy train and direct the money to where it is needed.

I totally agree Parmajit.
Unfortunately Condor Man lives in some kind of alternative Tory reality and should be ignored.

The schools have devolved budget powers. They manage their own financial affairs and yes they do have accountants.

The problem is that some Head Teachers and Governors are not as financially literate as they should be, with a clear focus on budgetary restraint.

However, the sums involved are small in proportion to the total spend on schools. Running a deficit from time to time is OK if it can be reined in - how many people use their overdraft facility?

And finally as one commentator said the majority of schools are well managed and in the black.

This sounds about right for the council. It's about time the council leaders to take a pay cut and stop wasteing money and start looking after the schools. It will come back to bit them on the bum and what happens next year the schools will have no money to spend. It's about time the tory council got off the fat arse's and did something about this and when they closed some schools was that to save money so where has that money gone ??
