Racer Dawn tames the Welsh weather

Dawn in action at Anglesey Dawn in action at Anglesey

Typical North Wales weather greeted Andover racer Dawn Boyd recently when she travelled for the latest rounds of the Golf Gti Championship. She had a few demons to bury on this trip as during her last Anglesey races her car was broken into overnight and she was determined to put this behind her. Testing on Friday was in beautiful sunshine but it was all change for qualifying on Saturday, very wet and windy, and not helped by the failure of her single windscreen wiper half way through.

Anglesey is right on the coast and very undulating making the relatively new circuit a real driver’s test, with fast long bends and tight winding corners down steep hills a real challenge. Despite the weather Dawn qualified reasonably well in tenth. She had a good start, confronting the weather, and with the circuit wet and slippery nerves were tested in the braking areas, one of which culminated in a controlled off which broke a wheel. Unperturbed Dawn fought to the end and as others exited the black stuff in increasingly dramatic fashion, she finished a creditable eighth in class.

On Sunday Anglesey finally dried out and the Golf's were out in the morning. Dawn made a great start and was right with the pack. The dryer track at Anglesey brings a whole new kind of slippery surface resulting in spins spreading the pack through the length of the circuit. Dawn had a close battle with a chain of five and a couple of daring moves down the mountain corners gained her seventh place.

Golfs are back on track at Cadwell Park next, a circuit Dawn has not raced before another long trek to Lincolnshire, but worth the trip!
