JMG Creative Print sponsored New Street U16 were crowned champions of the Peter Houseman Premier League last Sunday after a tense victory over fellow high fliers Woolton Hill meant they cannott now be caught by the chasing pack.

In a league containing the best teams from Newbury, Basingstoke and Reading as well as Andover, Street have been superb all season and despite this not being a vintage performance they have been worthy and impressive winners.

They knew only a win would do and looked nervous in front of goal as chances went begging and Woolton made them pay with a goal against the run of play to go into the break one up.

With Macca Woods and Marcus Tyler again in fine form at the back and Josh Cornwall driving them from midfield, Street began to assert some control in the second half.

When man of the match Ben Emmins finally showed his team mates how to stay cool in front of goal to equalise, it seemed a weight had been lifted.

With a quarter left, Zac Hines began to pull the strings in midfield and when striker Charlie Waite suddenly came to life to set up Emmins for a well taken second, the whole team visibly relaxed and showed why they are champions.

Waite set up the excellent Shea Massey for a fine third goal and with just minutes left Massey repaid him when a lovely run and cross was nodded home by Waite.

As the final whistle went there was jubilation and not a little relief for a group of lads who really have been a credit to the town this year.

Afterwards coach Declan Barrett was in jubilant mood: “These boys have been fantastic all year and really deserved this. They have worked hard to improve and are now a real force to be reckoned with at this age group in the whole of Hampshire.

“I would like to thank them and my assistant coach Callum Westwood for all the hard work and commitment that has made this possible.”
