The annual Valentine Scramble at the Hampshire Golf Club was a very close affair with all the teams returning nett scores within just 2.6 shots of the winners. The weather was bright but chilly, but nonetheless very well received by all competitors. The runners-up were the team comprising Eddie Drain, Mark Lewis, Ted Hurdle and Gary Smith who finished with 63.1. The winning team, also with an excellent score of 63.1 but winning on countback, was Barry Thorne, Judith Hancke, Mark Weston and Barry Crane. Their back nine, which ended with birdies at 17 and 18, turned the competition in their favour.
The weather conditions for the February Stableford were quite acceptable, especially when compared with the snow which fell and covered the course the previous Saturday. The club’s handicap secretary, Gary Smith (12), used his strokes to good effect and returned an excellent score of 39 points to win Division One. Paul Sanders (10) was a point back in second.
In Division Two, it appears that David Miller (15) must have been training hard during his holiday in the sun as he won with 37 points, just beating Paul Powley (15) on countback.
The seniors travelled to Weybrook Park for a re-arranged Seniors Winter League match. Team captain for the day Ray Neath played with Dave Sanders in the first match but went down 2&1. The second match out was Ted Richards and Nigel Page but once again it was the home team who came out on top with a 4&3 win. Richard Hale and John Dawson were the next pairing to try their luck but a 2&1 defeat ensued.
However, there was a tremendous fightback by Dean Cresswell and Vince Klass, who were four down with just a few holes to go, but they managed a terrific half to avoid the whitewash. The overall result was confirmed as 4.5- 0.5 once Guy Davis and Brian Gittings had confirmed yet another defeat by 4&3. The penultimate match for the club is away to Dummer.
