Unbeaten run comes to an end for New Street
11:20am Monday 25th February 2013 in Sport By Sports editor Kerry Miller
Stockbridge 2 US Portsmouth 0.
Two second half goals from Mike Barker and Jack Hutchings were enough to bring Stockbridge a well deserved victory over US Portsmouth in the Wessex League Division One at a chilly Rec on Saturday.
Robins welcomed back Steve Witt, Gav Burgess and Keith Harrison but lost Jake Freemantle in the warm up as he failed to recover from a knock on Tuesday and manager Stuart Thomson was naturally delighted with the win.
“It was a very good performance as we played really well” said Thomson “US Pompey are not a bad side and it was well deserved.”
After a goalless first half Barker rounded the keeper for the opener then Hutchings secured the win late on. “We defended well and it is always nice to keep a clean sheet and keeper Pete Roberts did well” he added “Steve Witt and Keith Harrison made a difference and Gav Burgess came in and did a great job too.” Tomorrow Stockbridge are home again as they entertain New Street Swifts in the semi-final of the Andover Open Cup.
Meanwhile Whitchurch United demolished an ill disciplined and largely disinterested Amesbury Town 9-0 at Longmeadow. Coming on the back of last Saturday’s excellent win at Petersfield, Jim Macey’s men were unstoppable on Saturday.
Hat-tricks from Sam Argent and Luke Walker were backed up by strikes from Paul Coventry, Adam Everiss and Ashley Childs as the Jamboys warmed up for Tuesday’s Andover Open Cup tie with Andover Lions.
New Street's unbeaten run came to an end as they were beaten 3-0 at home by a rapidly improving Pewsey Vale.
Andover Lions went down 5-2 at Crusaders in the Trophyman Cup.
