In Division 1 of the Andover Table Tennis League second placed Hanson A were lucky to come up against a two-man Tigers team who lost for the first time this season, going down 6-4. The closeness was thanks to three from Malcolm Cummins but Tigers are still odds on to win the division.
Wolversdene A are trying to snatch second place and just beat Figheldean 6-4. Steve Harris was in good form winning all his matches in three games but Trevor Whitelock was struggling and only just won one, beating Brian Cook 6-11, 11-5, 11-7, 3-11, 11-9. Phil Cook and Lionel Coles played well winning two each. In the bottom half Test Valley A went down 2-8 to Hanson C where Gerry Vaughan and Nick George recorded three each but for once the usually reliable Jamie Smith was beaten in five by an improving Paul Raymond 11-8, 6-11, 5-11, 11-7, 13-11. Paul and Dominic Raymond also recorded a very good doubles win for Test Valley, 13-11, 5-11, 8-11, 11-9, 11-8. l The Andover Closed Tournament was held over the weekend, with some finals and ladies matches to be played this evening (Friday). The Cadet and Junior events were played last Friday and Rhys Jones did exceedingly well to get to the Cadets final, but was well beaten by his more experienced opponent Neil McDonald 11-4, 11-4, 11-6. The same could be said of the Juniors where Ben Addington was beaten by Tomos Hardiman, 1-11, 6-11, 8-11.
The Open Singles and the Veterans finals will also be played this evening with both contested between Richard Fettes (defending champion) and Steve Harris.
