Although well pleased after Saturday’s game at New Milton Neil Benson played down Saturday’s win saying: “It was not a classic but there was a lot of good football played and we created plenty of chances.”

To the watching supporters who had made the journey to the New Forest, that statement can only have good connotations as Andover Town will be a breath of fresh air in the Wessex League this campaign.

The club has 22 players signed on Wessex forms and with the Elite Academy players and the U18 side also waiting in the wings for their senior chance these are exciting times for the new club.

A modest Benson added: “The win was important for all sorts of reasons, not just that it was the first match and it was a cup tie.

“The senior management team, the board of governors and the council have all brought this to fruition and it was pleasant to see the fruits on Saturday.

“It was only seven weeks ago we were given the nod to form a Wessex League club and put together a squad good enough to compete.

“We have brought 22 players together and they are a formidable set of lads and can only get better as they get match fit.

“There is a good spirit in the team and they all worked extremely hard “There will be a lot of good football played this season.”

Frustratingly for many concerned the fixture list now gives Town a week off but Benson sees this as a chance to get more of his squad up to match fitness.

“Cameron Hough was injured against Havant and Waterlooville and Lloyd Foot turned his ankle but both should be fine.” he stated.

The club were trying to set up a friendly for Saturday before the first league match, at home to Hythe and Dibden at Winklebury on August 17.

Should there be a match details will be posted here and in Friday's Advertiser.
