Ten man Thruxton take leaders to the wire
9:50am Monday 12th August 2013 in Sport
Thruxton v Odiham Greywell.
Thruxton, sponsored by JPD Property Services, put the frighteners on runaway league leaders Odiham when they were nine balls away from only their second win of the season. Ten man Thruxton batted first and the scorebook had a familiar sight to it after ten overs when they were reduced to 36-6, four being ducks, and a humiliating defeat was on the cards. Froome was the antagonist taking 5-26 off six overs but Odiham did not reckon on a 67 run partnership in seven overs between Matt Knight and Adam Mills, with Knight scoring 40 of his 53 in boundaries. He was the seventh man out with the score on 103 but Mills was still there and he forged a 43 run partnership with Stu Merry (16) before the latter was out in the 26th over. Mills and Steve Winstone added another 16 runs in four overs finishing on a defendable 164 all out with Mills 59 not out.
Dean Cresswell struck in the seventh with the score on 28 and they had to wait another 12 overs before he struck again trapping Hellings (39) and giving Thruxton a little hope with the score on 69-2. Thruxton kept plugging away in the field and Odiham had reached 101-4, until unfortunately for Thruxton their main bowlers had completed their allotted overs and it was down to the part timers, Paul Harvey and the untried Stu Merry. These two bowled magnificently reducing Odiham to 148-8 and Thruxton believed they could win the game. Harvey took the ninth wicket with the score on 161 but the final wicket would not fall and Froome broke Thruxton's hearts hitting the winning runs with nine balls to spare. Skipper Harvey finishing on 4-28 off 5.3 overs and commented: "What a great fight back by ten men, staring a humiliating defeat in the face at 36-6 to nearly snatching victory with just nine balls to spare against the league leaders.”
