A3 Time Trial brings third place for Wheelers
12:00am Wednesday 4th September 2013 in Sport
Andover Wheelers enjoyed another good weekend as five members entered the 50 mile time trial on the A3 course near Petersfield. With more than 90 entries and the first rider off at 6.30am it was a busy day but the event was extremely well run. Three of the Wheelers had never raced over a 50 mile distance before so it would be hard to judge how much effort to put in early on without leaving too much in reserve for a fast time.
As the finishing times started coming in it was looking good with Alan Spurden the fastest in 1hr 54.34 secs, Nigel Pratt in 1:55.17 and Steve Dance in 1:56.27. Gary Burley put in a personal best of 2:6.27 and Nick Cooper posted 2:6.39 secs.
For a while three of the Wheelers were looking good for a top ten finish but as some of faster seeded riders finished it was clear that this was not going to happen. In the end Spurden finished joint 15th, Pratt 19th, Dance 24th and Burley and Cooper 52nd and 53rd with 69 out of the 90 starters finishing the race.
More pleasing was the team prize and Andover Wheelers were pipped to third by just seconds but were nevertheless delighted as it was still their first 50 mile trail! Plans were made to come back stronger and faster next year.
