12:00am Wednesday 9th October 2013 in Sport
Andover Tennis Club held the finals of their Junior Club Championships recently with more than 18 events taking place.
Earlier rounds had been played throughout the summer and the entry numbers were excellent from the thriving junior club.
The U18 Boy’s Singles was a superb match with Sam Birks taking on Alex Lee. Birks is a player of great talent and he was matched against Lee who has improved his player rating this year and competed in tournaments and matches for the club.
The first set went to Alex 6-2, but Sam came back strongly to take the second 6-2, so the match went to a tie break third set, with Alex just winning 10-7.
In the U16s, Lee was matched against Jacob Webb, who has progressed greatly this summer.
In another excellent match where the score did not do justice to Jacob’s play, Alex took the title 6-1, 6-1.
In the Girls’ U18 event a round robin final was held between Georgia Moon, Anda Manole and Amy McDonald.
Georgia beat Anda 4-2, 4-1 and beat Amy 4-0, 4-1, thus taking the title.
Amy just beat Anda in a close encounter 0-4, 4-2, 10-7 for runner-up.
In the Boy’s U14 Singles Gregor Corcoran played strong tennis against his younger opponent Tom Lee, winning 6-0, 6-0.
In the Girl’s U14s Georgia beat Amy 4-1,5-3.
In the Boys’ U12s Will Moon played an excellent first set against Tom Lee, winning 6-0, but Tom fought back bravely in the second set, only just losing it 7-5, giving young Will his first U12 title.
In the Girls’ U12s, Alicia Cole showed how much progress she is making beating Elizabeth Wade, who has also improved a lot this year, 4-3, 4-0.
In the Mini Tennis Finals (ten years and under), the Mini Green U10 Boys’ title was contested between Ollie Hall and Henry Smith.
This was an excellent match with Ollie winning 4-3.
In the Girls Mini Green U10 event, the more experienced Olivia Besant played some steady tennis against Hazel Atkins, winning 4-0, 4-0.
In the Mini Orange U9 bronze play-off Olivia Besant beat Oliver Ciepley 4-2 and in the final Mark Mackie beat Ollie Hall 4-0.
In the Mini Red U8 bronze play-off Freddy Riley beat Amelia Dowsett in a close match 10-7.
In the final of the U8 Mini Red, there was some truly excellent tennis with both players handling the pressures well and playing great ground shots as Ewan Small beat Humphrey Hughes 10-5.
