Robins fend off Tadley comeback to go fourth
Stockbridge 3 Tadley Calleva 2.
Stockbridge shrugged off two heavy defeats last week to bounce back and beat Tadley Calleva to cement fourth place in the Wessex League Division One.
Joint boss Terry Chapman was delighted with the performance after the disappointments at Petersfield and home to Bournemouth in the Hants Senior Cup. “We played some really good football in the first half and Stuart Findlay was at his best and created chances in the first 15 minutes before we were given a penalty for handball and he made it 1-0.”
Along with Dean Higgins and Daryl Phillips the experienced forward line were fed through Ben Thompson who pulled all the strings in midfield and went past players and was playing diagonal balls at will but the score stayed at 1-0 until ten minutes after the break when another Thompson ball found Findlay and two touches later in was in the net. “Calm and confident finish from a class finisher” was Chapman’s summing up of the goal but he had no explanation for what then happened.
“We missed a couple of chances but then for some reason the wheels fell off and we let Tadley back in it.”
Individual errors began to creep in and around the hour mark former Whitchurch United striker Brett Denham was on hand to score as Tadley caught Robins cold at a throw in.
Two minutes later it was 2-2 as Denham again found the net but the plot thickened soon after as the visitors had a man sent off which seemed to galvanise them and it was not until the introduction of Dan Bapty that Robins wrestled back the initiative.
“Dave Egerton played a big part in that as he seemed to help the players to rally themselves and he took responsibility and with Bapty and Josh Harfield pushed up to take advantage of the extra man it was Bapty’s bullet header which won the game” added Chapman.
This Saturday Stockbridge go to Ringwood Town without Dean Higgins, who has work commitments and are home to Andover New Street on Wednesday in the North Hants Senior Cup.
