Sparsholt Saints hit five against Slough Town
Soton Sparsholt 5 Slough Town 1.
Southampton Sparsholt made it to big wins in a week on Wednesday as they crushed visiting Slough Town 5-1 at the college ground.
With a number of the squad having played for Andover Town’s North Hants Senor Cup tie at Whitchurch only 15 hours earlier they could have been excused for starting slowly but inside ten minutes Josh Bertie had robbed a defender on the left touchline and fed Ed Chappe who fired home from 15 yards. Five minutes later it 2-0 as Hillary Ndagurwa’s diving header from Callum Cuniffe-Pilley’s cross beat Slough keeper Mark Hoodless.
The young Saints went for the jugular and Scott Munro’s 20 yard drive ended up in the net to make it 3-0 and Slough were looking down the barrel of a hiding but to their credit they regrouped and Josh Mehmet oulled one back soon after.
The strong wind was having an effect on the normal smooth passing play but the finishing was clinical and on the half hour Bertie again found room and pulled a ball back and when the Slough defence failed to clear Charlie Gunson smashed home the fourth from 20 yards.
Slough’s defence then began pressing on and the system worked for a while as Ndagurwa, Chappe and Bertie all fell foul of the offside trap.
After the break Chappe twice went close and Gunson’s drive hit a defender and rebounded back to Hoodless but on 72 minutes Munro fed substitute Oli Bailey and he made it 5-1 with some ease.
