The Hampshire Golf Club Seniors played their eighth of ten matches in the Winter League – continuing their friendly rivalry with Andover GC by playing hosts.

Although extremely wet the course held up well as captain Ray Neath (17) looked for his team’s second victory in the competition.

Neath paired up with vice-captain Alan Dixon (13) against Andover captain Ted Bentley (16) and his experienced partner Roger Crook (16).

In a close match in which Alan played well, the Andover pairing just edged it, one hole up.

In the second match, the Hampshire welcomed back Vince Klass (10) after eye surgery, paired with Richard Hale (15) against quiet and reserved John Sheen (12) and David Kettell (18) – and it was the home pair who tasted success this time in another tight match that also went to the 18th hole when they won one up.

Fred Finlay (13) and John Dawson (10) were paired together in match three for the Hampshire against Pete Allen (12) and Cliff Baker (13) and once again it was the Andover pair who were successful 2 and 1.

John Rogers (12) partnered Barrie Thompson (17) in the fourth match against Jon Leckie (14) and Mervyn Perry (13) and again it produced a victory for the away side by 2 and 1.

In the final match Guy Davis (8) and Dean Cresswell (11) were up against Richard Gilderson (19) and Fred Brender (26) and in yet another match that went to the 18th hole.

It took good putt from Cresswell to secure a halved match for the Hampshire.

However, the overall result was a 3.5-1.5 win for Andover and that leaves the Hampshire still seeking their second win and in fifth place in the league, with Andover third out of six.

The Hampshire now await their penultimate match at Dummer next Tuesday.
