Saturday sees one of the most important sporting days in Andover for some time with the very real chance of a double promotion in rugby and football for the town teams.

In the Wessex League Premier Division Andover Town go to fourth placed Hythe and Dibden knowing that a win and results elsewhere going their way would see promotion assured in the club’s maiden season.

Boss Neil Benson believes it is now a three club fight at the top and with second placed Petersfield Town at home to third place Cowes Sports the job could be half done with promotion assured by 5pm.

“It is a big week for the club and a key time. Hythe and Dibden are on a decent run and we will give them maximum respect” he told the Advertiser.

“We are aware that it could go in our favour at Hythe and look forward to as many of our supporters making the journey down as possible. The support at Petersfield was superb and the players said it made a big difference.”

Town hope to welcome back Tom Riddell and Cole Hinchcliffe to the squad after long absences but Ike Robertson is out for the season having had a set back following his appendix operation.

Meanwhile at the Goodship Ground Andover RFC prepare for a promotion party of their own as they entertain Overton knowing victory would give them a return to the London Leagues.

Head coach Andy Waite said: “We don’t expect them to make it easy for us. We have won nothing yet and we need to make sure we play well”.

“It is a huge occasion for the club and the sporting community of the town and we would love to see a big crowd turn up to cheer us on, whether you are rugby fans or not.

‘All of our players are either from our academy or live locally and it would be great to see the town really get behind them.”

Kick-off for both games is at 3pm
