Season ends and New Street welcome new boss Paul

Matt Styles' reign as manager of Andover New Street ended in disappointment with two heavy away defeats with depleted squads at US Portsmouth and Hythe and Dibden on Thursday and Saturday.

As predicted he resigned from the top job at Foxcotte Park on Saturday morning before the trip to Hythe and Dibden which once again was played with a bare 11 prepared to travel.

Following three wins on the spin which took his side off the bottom of Wessex League Division One, Styles took a scratch squad to Portsmouth with several carrying knocks and after losing Dave Cotter and Jack Hutchings early through injury were forced to play most of the game with ten men and the home side took full advantage, slamming nine without reply past keeper Dave Tasker.

Harry Bass and Mark Connet scored two goals each, as did Matt Magro and Ami Rosario, while Phil Braithwaite came off the bench to also score for the hosts.

On Saturday former Andover striker Lee Burch’s side wrapped up their impressive campaign with a 7-0 home win. Stone and Olabiyi both scored two goals each with one each from Brock, Cox and O’Dell.

Styles will now be weighing up his options for next season and was naturally disappointed at the season in general. “We did well to get off the bottom of the league with those three wins but I was always up against poor commitment. I understand that people have to work but to be honest I feel let down by some who I see as friends as well as players.”

I wish the new man all the best for the new season.”

The new man is Paul Reidy who steps up from managing New Street Swifts in the Andover and District League.
