Andover Golf Club’s Seniors captain, Ted Bentley held his Seniors Open on Wednesday June 18 at the Winchester Road course. It took the form of a team challenge whereby the three best Stableford scores on each hole went towards the overall team score.

The best team on the day with 115 points was that of Bentley with John Howarth and Des Pearce from the home club who were joined by the Seniors captain from The Hampshire, Ray Neath.

Second place, just a point behind was the team of Tom Sturgess, John Hague and Rod Skeates from Andover and John Stamp of The Hampshire.

Third place team with 112 was Seniors vice-captain David Kettell with fellow Andover member Roger Brookes and Colin Woodward from Bishopswood and Terry Wilkinson from Leckford.

The best individual visitor with 35 was Colin Woodward closely followed by Guy Davis from The Hampshire on a count back.

The best home player and winner of the Kennett Trophy was David Kettell on count back from Bentley and Sturgess all with 36. The over 70s prize went to Roger Brooks on count back from Mervyn Perry both with 34 points.

The ‘skill prizes’ were won by John Rogers, member of both Andover and The Hampshire, for the longest drive on the 15th, the straightest drive on the 18th was won by Mike Bacon from Kingsdown and nearest the pin on the 17th was won by Adrian Boulton from Andover.

Nearest at the sixth was Mike Power from Sherfield Oaks who was the only player to score a two and thereby scooped the prize.

A nine hole putting competition, sponsored by Greene King, was won by Les Britten with four single putts from fiveplayers with 15 putts.

The course was in possibly the best condition in most player’s memory and the greens were particularly quick as they had been cut earlier that morning which probably contributed to the low Stableford scores.
