Andover Town dipped their toe into pre season on Thurday last with an 8-0 win over a very young Andover New Street, containing a sprinkling of former and current Sparsholt students.

Coach Lewis Benson said: “We played really well and scored some excellent goals and it was good to see Danny Urry back on the pitch as he has been out for a long time and was exceptional.”Matt Scott put Town ahead before Charlie Gunson, who has moved up to the senior squad this summer, added a second in an excellent performance. Tom Riddell finished off a 15 pass move with a clinical strike for the third and Nic Turpin and Zak Neve made it 5-0 before the break.

Michael Dixon netted twice and Benson himself scored with a free-kick to make it 8-0 at the end. New Street boss Paul Reidy praised his own young squad who he said ‘kept going and tried to play when they had the ball and despite the scoreline there were lots of plusses’.

Macaulay Stubbs, who is part of the Saints Elite squad at Sparsholt, did well with Gary Thorne and Keiron LeBrun, and Craig Harman also put in good shifts, while young Tom Crozier had a fine game in goal in the second half.

Reidy was also complimentary of Andover Town saying: “Their attitude right through was so professional and their attacking play was outstanding. They did not at any time take the Mick and I wish them all the best for the season.”

Town have another game at Sparsholt College this Thursday, ko 6.45pm against another Wessex Division One side, Amesbury Town then go to Winchester Castle on Saturday at 2pm. New Street go to Western League Corsham Town on Saturday and continue their training sessions at Charlton on Wednesday at 7pm.
