The Hampshire Golf Club captain Barry Thorne held a Captain's Charity Day on Sunday in support of MacMillan Cancer Support.

Under sunny skies, those participating played in a very enjoyable three-ball Dubai Stableford format competition.

Utilising and retaining the yellow ball to get the double points available was key to getting a good team score and only about half the teams finished the 18th hole with the yellow ball still in their possession.

Three teams played exceptionally well and in third place with 120 points was the team of Neil McGowan, Steven White and Gareth Hughes.

Second with 121 were Kim Couch, Richard Hale and Graham Holloway, and the winners with 122 were David Preston, Barry Crane and Luke Neve. A further £260 was raised on the day towards the captain’s charity.

Sue Davis and Rosemary Parnell were the Hampshire GC’s ladies’ representatives in the county Knight Cup competition this year, with the format being foursomes match play.

In the first round they beat Worldham Park and in round two Liphook GC, both at home, before beating Southampton away.

Their next match was a difficult tie at Blackmoor GC where sadly they were defeated 2 and 1 and so just missed out on a place in the semi-finals and final of this competition, which will be played at Petersfield GC on September 10.

However, it was a great effort and they should be commended for some excellent golf in this top county competition.
