Whitchurch’s come from behind win at Bournemouth Poppies on Saturday elevated them to the dizzy heights of third in the Wessex League Premier Division, two points behind leaders Petersfield and Moneyfields but with a game in hand on both and with matches against Newport IOW, Petersfield and Winchester City on the horizon these are exciting times at Longmeadow.

Manager Carl Bennett was at pains to play down his side’s superb start where they are the only unbeaten side in the division having only lost once in 13 games this campaign and that, an unlucky FA Cup replay defeat at Hallen with a depleted side.

“I am chuffed with how it is going especially as it is far more than was ever expected. We will be pushing hard to keep it the way it is but the players are motivating themselves and are where they are for a reason. It’s no fluke as there is only a certain amount we can do as managers.”

Bennett has added defender Cole Hinchcliffe to his squad from Andover Town as well as former Andover midfielder Danny Barker who is planning a return to playing action having been managing in the Hampshire League for a spell.

The 36 year old brings experience to a squad alongside Ben Thompson, also 36, where the next oldest is around 24 and Bennett added: “It is not only on the pitch that things have come good as the backroom and committee are all making my job much easier.”

On Saturday the Jam Boys take a break from league action as they travel to Pewsey Vale for a League Cup tie but it is back to the league on Wednesday when Horndean visit for a 7.45pm kick-off.
