LAST weekend was a relatively quiet one for Andover HC as the break for school holidays hit the fixtures and only the men’s and ladies firsts and the men’s seconds in action.

The ladies were away to Fareham, who were just above them in the league and the sides played out a goalless draw to maintain their positions in the lower half of the League.

The men’s firsts have been firing on all cylinders so far this season and their good run continued with a 3-0 win over Havant III at John Hanson School.

The first half saw the sides sparring to get the initial breakthrough and it was Andover who seemed to have slightly the upper hand.

The breakthrough came just before half-time when Sam Cowley received a through ball down the right and shot home.

This steadied the home side’s nerves and their confidence could be seen from the restart.

The second half saw Havant try to claw their way back into the game but Andover added a second when Sam Goucher latched on to a pass to firmly strike the ball past the Havant ‘keeper. The visitors tried everything to get back into the game but Andover were more than a match for them and scored their third 12 minutes from time to tidy things up for the day.

With four games played Andover are two points clear of Haslemere and Salisbury. It’s a long way to go to the end of the season but Andover have made an excellent start and will be looking to consolidate their position.

The men’s seconds travelled to Havant and won 3-2 to maintain their excellent start to the season.

Matt Weymouth scored the first goal, lifting it over the keeper from the short corner.

Within five minutes the second came from a strong strike from just inside the D by Dan Allen.

Richard Ship’s screamer made it 3-0, but Havant pulled one back just before the break.

The hosts got another in the second half, but Andover held on to win. So far the seconds have only dropped two points and they are looking to consolidate their position in the run up to the season break in December.
