WHITCHURCH United manager Carl Bennett claims his side were 'unlucky' not to take any points from their game against Fareham, despite falling to a 3-1 home defeat.

Although the home side had a lot of chances throughout the game, they were unable to capitalise and take their second win in three days following their 1-0 win at Portchester.

United named a good side to try and take three points as goalkeeper Matthew Austin was drafted in to replace Oluwasean Ayeomoni and Andre Manders also making way for McCaulie Stubbs.

Thomas Lockyer, Danny Phillips and Reece Rusher were all also named in the starting team.

Fareham Town made two changes to the side that beat Team Solent 5-3 at Test Park.

Zac Gill was given a starting position ahead of Jimmy Cuthbert, as was Simon Woods, who replaced Ashley Tattersall while Mattheusz Zaremski and Christian Dewey also made appearances.

The Jam Boys were behind very early on as Zac Gill was able to find the Whitchurch goal in the opening minutes.

As the defenders appealed for offside from a lobbed ball to the Fareham player, it left Gill just to slot the ball past Matthew Austin and put United straight on the back foot.

Neither team could find the net as both sides battled for possession in the midfielder.

However it was Fareham who struck once again with Bradey Norton getting in on goal mid way through the second half leaving him with an easy chance to get the first of the season.

Whitchurch got their only goal of the match and gave some hope of an equaliser shortly after Fareham doubled their lead.

Scot Hassell latched on to a cross from a free kick on the right hand side, it was a good header that kept the home side in the game still.

However, hopes of at least a point were all but extinguished when, again on the break, Fareham’s Gill was left to put his second of the day in, as Fareham travelled back to Portsmouth all smiles with the three points.

After the game, Whitchurch manager Carl Bennett said that his team were disappointed not to get the points from the game.

He said: “We were unlucky - We had loads of chances but failed to capitalise whereas Fareham had about four chances and scored three.

"I spoke to their manager after the game and he couldn’t believe they had beaten us.

"I was really disappointed not to come away with anything.”

On the start of the season, Bennett added: “It’s been a mixed start.

"We had some fantastic results against Salisbury and Portchester but we’ve been frustrated at times by our inconsistency.

"We seem to get up for the big games, but take our foot off the pedal with others.”
