ANDOVER Mens A triumphed over Andover Mens B when the team went head-to-head in the first match of the Summer Basingstoke League Division One.

The A team had a strong side with Andrew Winnett, Anthony Brown, Martyn Isherwood and Robbie Hadfield.

Meanwhile the B team had Dan Arnold, Adrian Shapter and the youngest member Tommy Mackie and were strengthened by bit-part A team player Mike Prince.

Prince and Mackie fought well all morning, with positive attacking tennis, however they could not quite match the power and consistency of Winnett and Brown, who came out on top by 6-3, 6-3.

Against Isherwood and Hadfield they played well again but the ground strokes of Hadfield and the athletic volleying of Isherwood proved a little too much and they were beaten by 6-4. 6-3.

Dan Arnold and Adrian Shapter were also beaten by both A pairs, 6-3, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-2.

Chairman of the Basingstoke League, Richard Mole, commented on the strength in depth in Andover’s ranks.

The Andover A team will be favourites for the title so the B team should be encouraged by their performance, even though the A team took all the points on this occasion.
