LEGENDARY Southampton manager Lawrie McMenemy dropped in to the Overton Recreation Centre’s 50-year celebration.

The event coincided with the 40th anniversary of Saints winning the FA Cup and McMenemy who guided them to that famous victory at Wembley enjoyed his time in Overton and said: “This community is a marvellous example of what can be achieved if you all pull together.”

More than 100 children and adults got involved on the day in a wide range of sports and activities available within the 30 acres of green space protected by the sports charity.

There was a feast of entertainment available on the day which included football, walking football, cricket, athletics, tennis, table tennis, golf, aerobics, art, photography, music, dancing as well as a barbecue.

Event organiser Graham Devereux said: “It was a fantastic day.

“We have significantly raised the profile of what we do and also donated £400 to St Michael’s Hospice.

“We want as much participation as we can muster as we know the long term health benefits for family life of being involved.”

The Recreation Centre continued its 50th anniversary celebrations with a Fun Run on Saturday at the Berrydown Centre and there is a Teddy Bear’s picnic on June 5 at the Town Meadow.
