WHITCHURCH United boss Carl Bennett says he “can’t wait” for the new Wessex Premier League season to begin and is tipping his Jam Boys to cause plenty of upsets during their upcoming campaign.

The former Romsey Town manager, now in his third season at Longmeadow, has kept himself busy in the off-season with the hope of improving on last season’s 14th placed finish.

The Jam Boys have been boosted by the resigning of several key players including full-backs Taurean Manders and Ryan Lambert as well as centre-backs Scott Hassell and Cole Hinchcliffe.

Last season’s late signing Cameron Hough will return to Longmeadow this season as will Damian Hack and Tyler Lewis.

Sam Floyd, who played one game during Whitchurch United’s last campaign, has committed to the club this season.

The 6ft 6in midfielder is expected to feature heavily with boss Bennett describing him as “massive, but a very talented footballer”.

One of the biggest boosts, however, is the resigning of talented midfielder Jack Garner, who returns to the fold after a yearand-a-half out of the game.

Bennett said: “He looks like he’s never been away.

“He looked rusty for 10 minutes but that was it, he’s absolutely buzzing for the season.”

Other signings include former Salisbury man Callum Sweeney, while the likes of Ali Ward and Mich Coleman have all agreed to play at Longmeadow this season.

Talking about his new recruits, Bennett said: “They all look very comfortable on the ball.

“We’ve got a few games in preseason to get them used to the way we play.

“Callum looks a very very good player but I’m not going to say too much until I’ve seen him play a few games.”

Asked how he feels going into the campaign, Bennett replied: “I personally can’t wait.

“We start off with a big big game against Amesbury.

“Their manager Jim (Macey) used to be at Whitchurch and they’ve got the likes of Ali Brown and Adam Pearson who have both played for us.

“So they will want to come here and play well.

“But we are strong and I am confident we are going to have a good season.

“We are stronger than our first year and we are stronger than we were last year.”
