Andover Youth FC’s annual tournament was made extra special this year, thanks to new club sponsors Asda Andover.
More than 120 teams travelled to the event at Walworth Playing Fields last weekend for the 14th year the club has played host to the tournament and this year Phoenix won the U14s tournament, Andover Youth U12 won the U12s and Southampton Academy Belles won the U12s girl's tournament. The U9's was won by Down Grange and U10's by Hatch Warren FC. Thatcham Town Harriers took the U11s.
Asda Andover created an extra special award for the team who played the fairest games throughout the tournament, won by Shipton Bellinger Rams who received a hamper of goodies, including towels, sports socks, watches, fruit and sports bottles.
Les Clemo, general store manager of Asda Andover, was invited to present trophies and medals.
Max Allen also received an award for being the most sporting individual player. Max plays for the Andover U13 and helped them reach the semi-finals.
Unfortunately, Max was injured and had to be stretchered off and so brother Ross collected the award on his behalf.
Les Clemo said: “It's great to see so many children who are enthusiastic about sport. When Phil asked if I would come down and present the trophies, I was more than happy to accept.”
Asda also provided prizes for the tombola games at the tournament and helped to fund 15 qualified referees, including 73-year old Ernie Davey, who has been participating since the tournament started in 1995.
Phil Holloway, club welfare officer, commented: “The tournament was really successful this year, with more than 2,000 attending each day. The boys and girls showed some real talent and all the planning finally came together on the day for such a great result. ‘I can’t thank the social committee enough, they’ve all worked so hard to organise the tournament.”
“The team at Asda Andover have showed us some great support too and Shipton Rams were so excited when they received their award; it's good to recognise the team who have shown the most sporting attitude, as well as the winning teams.”
