WINTON Schoolboy Gary Jones’s athletic season is progressing well.
After taking the Hampshire Schools championship titles in U17 hammer and discus last month he followed by winning the discus at the SE Schools inter counties in Southampton a week later with his very first throw of 41.14m.
Recently Gary (pictured) represented Hampshire at the English Schools championships in Sheffield, again at his favourite event, the discus. He faced the best 18 throwers in the country and bottom age Gary knew he had to produce something special to make the top eight cut. With conditions near perfect the competition was hot and he did not disappoint, smashing his personal best by more than two metres with 43.67m to finish seventh.
The throw was so special that it was above national standard and entry standard for English athletics U17 champions in Bedford next month where he will compete for Bournemouth AC.
He has also moved up the rankings to ninth and will aim higher next month.
