Labels stick to winning task

The Andover and District Saturday League kicked off the new season with a few surprises.

New boys Downton Sports and Vernham Labels both made their mark on local football by throwing down the gauntlet. Downton entertained Test Valley Lions who were missing six regulars and after a very tight first half the youthful Lions found the stronger and more experienced home side difficult to cope with and Downton went into the break with a deserved 1-0 lead.

The second half saw Lions draw level through Nick Bensaid’s composed finish. Defensive errors then let Downton back into the game three more times.

The new boys from the Test Valley stable had a very different experience against visiting Inkpen. With an average age of 33, they set a new club record as they conceded 23 goals to a hungry Inkpen forward line. Despite the goal-fest the Geriatrics never gave up and managed to keep a sense of humour.

Youthful Kings Somborne had a great start to their new season with a 1-0 win over Ludgershall Sports. A total of eight players brought up through the youth team played, and player/coach Marcus Palk scored the winning goal. AFC Danebury and Danebury Sports were hoping for a more successful start but AFC found ABC Utd in the form that saw them triumph in the six-a-side recently as they put five past AFC with the home side only managing two in reply. Sports also found an in-form Vernham Labels difficult opposition and succumbed 3-0.

The other newcomers FC Star visited Whitchurch A and came away pointless after going down 5-1.
