Runs galore at Burghclere but nine man Thruxton refuse to go under

Burghclere v Thruxton.
Thruxton, sponsored by JPD Property Services, succumbed to a heavy defeat on Saturday despite a battling performance. A severely depleted Thruxton missing five regulars were on a hiding to nothing when they were asked to field on the hottest day and with only nine players. They gamely stuck to their task however and took two early wickets with the impressive 14-year old Johnny Darling making the breakthrough and skipper Paul Harvey took the second wicket in the 12th over with the score already on 79. Burghclere’s Ben Lawrence then feasted on the bowling before Darling returned in the 28th over to take the third wicket but Burghclere already had a commanding total of 232-3. Another 150 runs were added in the final 14 overs to leave a mountain to climb as Lawrence finished unbeaten on 255. Darling was the pick of the bowlers taking 2-62 off his ten overs, Harvey took 2-74 and Steve Picket piced up a wicket in his first ever over in league cricket.
By the fifth over Thruxton were 22-3 but they did not bank on veteran Dean Creswell in a stubborn mood.
Pickett fell for 27 in the 16th over leaving Thuxton staring down the barrel of a massive defeat on 64-4 but Creswell had never tasted such a defeat in his 50 year career and he treated everyone to his repertoire of cricket and golf shots over the next 23 overs.
He had a willing partner in Sam Newton who contributed 45 in a massive 148 run partnership and they did the job and got Thruxton to maximum batting points. Creswell departed the next over for a magnificent 113 his second century in 15 years.
Andy McGovern (13no) and Steve Winstone (8no) closed out the remaining overs ensuring Thruxton were not bowled out.
