Title chase still on for Longparish after last over drama
Longparish’s title chase was tested to the fore on Saturday when they beat Alton III by 11 runs in the last over.
They lost the toss and batted and Jeremy Pang-Kessler terminated a brief sabbatical from the game to bowl a cute opening spell trapping Longparish opener William de Cani leg before in the seventh over. Ben Gardner struck a stylish 52 to restore the faltering innings and Martin Bearpark, up from the Seconds, added 31. Barry Blackmore batted beautifully and looked to be heading for a season’s best score before he too fell leg before to Pang-Kessler as Longparish closed on 187-9.
With the regular opening attack absent Matt Jackman took the new nut and picked up a sharp catch off his own bowling in the fourth over.
Seconds’ stalwart Martin Savage took 1-24 from eight overs and Ben Gardner 2-48, but Harry Martin proved the pick of the Longparish attack with 1-18 from ten overs including two at the death which left Alton needing 18 from the final six balls with one wicket remaining.
Debutant Simon Rees hit the second ball for six before holing out for a superb 72 with Alton III 11 runs short of the target.
