First win for fledgling town side

Penton II v Andover VI.

Andover VI, without a win in their four week history, visited Penton II.

The prospects of breaking their duck looked poor when opener David Richards fell leaving them 31-4 after 14 overs. However fourteen year old Kieran Godwin showed his older team members how to play, hitting a mature 52 to bring some hope. Partnered by Graham Souter they put on 69 for the seventh wicket and after the 42 overs Andover had reached 137. Penton started well, reaching 30 without loss after ten overs; however wickets started to fall at regular intervals. There was some exceptional fielding, including a diving catch at slip by Brendan Clarke and an astonishing catch by Jon Rogers. Despite a gallant last stand of 45 between Thompson and Kavanagh Penton fell tenshort of their target and Andover V won by nine runs. A fine match played in a good spirit and a landmark day.

Falklands v Andover Sunday.

ON the hottest day of the year so far, Andover’s Sunday XI registered an emphatic win at picturesque Falklands CC in the Border League.

Batting first, Martin Roberts (60) and captain Jonty Hadfield (18) started steadily and provided the base needed to push on. More runs came with Will Turner battling to make a scratchy 36 while in- form Mike Adams (52) bullied the attack with a display of powerful hitting. At the end of the innings Matt Hooper (23no) and Luke Graham (40no) helped themselves to some generous bowling to finish on 259-6.

In response, Falklands started well, scoring at well above the rate. However, tight bowling from Phil Knight (1-25) helped to curtail the run rate.

The game then swung Andover’s way when the experienced Andy Hooper (1-41) and Matt Hooper (4-43) bowled their spin in tandem. Wickets fell regularly and some good catching, including the moment of the match when Jack Andrews nonchalantly glided across the grass to catch the rocketing ball one handed, meant that Hadfield (2-19) could finish off the Falklands innings at 185 to give Andover a 74-run win.
