Amport denied in last ball tie at Petersfield

Petersfield v Amport.

After the disappointment of last weekend’s defeat, Amport travelled to Petersfield wanting to put things right.

They got off to a good start with skipper Nick Bone winning the toss and selecting to bat. Openers Graham White and Charlie Ayers got off to a steady start before Ayers fell in the seventh over with the score on 27. Number three Ian Langdown joined White and saw the score past 50 before White was bowled by Straw. Langdown (38) showed signs of a return to form before being out leg before wicket which brought Lee Ayers to the crease and he and the skipper knew the infamous Amport collapse could be on the cards and they were determined to steady the ship.

Bone and Ayers put on 50 over the next 15 overs, taking the score to 100 and the platform was ready for the score could push on, and push on it did. Losing Bone (16) and Bruen in quick succession did not shake Ayers’ concentration and when Martyn Startup joined him, he was in no mood to let up. The next 15 overs brought 125 runs, including ten fours and five sixes for Ayers with Startup supporting him both running and taking boundaries where available. Both ended up not out, with Ayers finishing with a brilliant 98 and Startup on 17.
