Andover kart racer Gary Catt will be hoping to be the first British driver to become European champion in karting's top category since Formula 1 sensation Lewis Hamilton won the title in 2000.
With two races remaining Catt leads by four points ahead of current European champion and team mate Marco Ardigo. Catt and Ardigo, who drive for the Tonykart racing team, will battle it out at the last round in Braga, Portugal to see who will come out as champion. "Obviously its going to be very close, the championship is very close and it all goes down to the last round where I will be hoping for a good weekend and become European champion", said Catt. The first two rounds were held in France where he claimed a first and a second place but the next races in Belgium didn't go so well for the Brit and it saw his lead in the championship shorten and with one round to go its still all to play for.
After the final round of the European championship preparation for the biggest race of the year, the world karting championship will begin for the Andover driver which this year will be held in the south of Italy in Lecce. "I have a good chance to win both this year but at the moment I'm just thinking about the race in Portugal before I cast my attention to the World Championship", said Gary.
The European Kart Championship has always been a very prestigious title and most of today's Formula 1 drivers have competed in it before moving on. The race which will be filmed by Eurosport TV, will be held at the end of the month.
