Stocksbridge enjoy awayday

1:56pm Friday 15th August 2008

Tadley Calleva 1 Stocksbridge 2.

Tadley Calleva 1 Stockbridge 2 Stockbridge had a great start to the season with a 2-1 victory at league champions, Tadley.

The Robins gave debuts to local brothers Mike and Dave Barker and both of them had good games. They also welcomed back Gavin Richards after a spell at Laverstock and Ford and he forged a good partership with Dave Barker at the heart of the defence. Stockbridge made a good start and Adam Kerr was unlucky not to squeeze the ball home from an Andy Burgess corner on ten minutes. Soon after, Chris Payne saw his drive from the right go just past the post.

On 25 minutes Tadley's Paul Rolfe was sent off for preventing the ball going in the net, only for Steve Witt to see his shot from the ensuing penalty saved by Tadley keeper Darren Maunder.

Within 30 seconds the Robins found themselves a goal down as Tadley broke away and Mark Piper fed the ball inside for Tyrone Aldridge to lob Allen Ralph and give Tadley the lead.

Stockbridge were rocked by this goal and took a while to get back in their stride but just before the break Witt forced a good save from Maunder.

The second half saw Witt pull a shot wide early on and midway through the half, a now rattled Tadley defence gave away a second penalty when Maunder brought down Nick Coates in the box and this time Mike Barker made no mistake from the spot to level the scores.

As Stockbridge kept surging forward first Dave Barker was denied by Maunder then Adam Kerr had a one on one but was somehow denied. The winning goal when it came was a great move, a fine cross from Kerr found Witt at the far post who drove the ball home from close in. Tadley then lost the plot and had Kevin Beaumont sent off for dragging Kerr down as he tried to break through. Assistant manager, Stuart Thompson, in charge with Barry Andrews on holiday finished the game with a smile on his face after a job well done.

Tomorrow Stockbridge play host to US Portsmouth at the Recreation Ground at 3pm and on Wednesday they travel to Shaftesbury for another Wessex League game.
