A MIXED bag of results this week for Andover Bowls Club with the critical ones going against them.
Looking back over the season however, it has been encouraging with most of the teams leading their divisions at some stage.
The Salisbury League men's side travelled to play Mere on Monday and enjoyed the wonderful facilities and hospitality and it was a fruitful journey as they took maximum points in winning 14-0.
Unfortunately a trip to Alderbury later in the week was just the reverse, losing 14-0. The ladies faired little better in their home match with Amesbury, losing 10-0.
In the Whitchurch League the A team played a rearranged match with Littleton at home on Monday and won 4-1, but went to Basingstoke on Wednesday and lost 5-0. It was only their second defeat in 12 matches and they remain top. The B team won 3-2 at home to Old Basing, the C team lost 4-1 at Hook B and the D team lost at home to St Mary Bourne 5-0.
In the Basingstoke Rinks League, Andover entertained Howard Park B of Basingstoke on Friday and remain on course to win the divisional championship. The 5-0 win was very encouraging, especially for Pete Merritt who has nursed this team along.
l On Sunday the club players contested the Jack Keel Triples in pleasant weather. An inspired draw brought the club's most senior member Fred Corden to play with the youngest Chris Rowe, balanced with Janet Mitchell. This triple contested the final with Ray Westbrook, Rosemary Marshall and Bill Rawlingson. Ray's triple dropped six shots on the first end, usually a death blow, but they fought back to take five on the last to tie the final. The extra end tie-breaker reflected the match with the winning shot coming with the last woods, as rather against the odds, Westbrook's triple claimed the title.
