Streets ahead of the champions

1:03pm Wednesday 20th August 2008

New Street 4 Tadley Calleva 2.

Street's crowd of almost 100 witnessed an entertaining game which had everything.

Street took the game to current champions Tadley and were rewarded with goals from Ben McCredy on 19 minutes and Jamie Piper on 24 minutes before being pegged back to 2-1 just before half-time. Tadley came out after the break the better side and it was no surprise when they drew level. Street then made an inspired substitution, putting on Steve Caswell who changed the game. Giant defender John Robb rose to head home the third goal and after Tadley had caused Street to defend well, McCredy broke to grab the fourth. The game was far from over as Dave Tasker made a fantastic penalty save before Tadley were reduced to ten men, after having a man sent off for foul and abusive language, followed by the coach being ordered from the dug out.

Manager Jimmy Wilson commented on New Street'sd new attitude this season and said that it was a deserved win and the hope is now to push up the league.

Street's first home game of the season last Thursday attracted a crowd nearly double that of last season's average against fancied Hythe and Dibden.

The first half had the look of a 0-0 draw before the game sprung into life on 65 minutes when Hythe took the lead through Terry Cox. Street were then given a lifeline from the penalty spot and 17-year old Ben McCredy levelled but Hythe took the lead again through former Lion Kevin Reacord. McCredy then equalised again with three minutes left. Hythe snatched a winner in injury time through Ben Thomson and had a man sent off for violent conduct right on the whistle.

Street's Mark Kamara was disappointed to lose a second game in a row to an own goal despite playing some fine football.

New Street went down 1-0 to Blackfield and Langley on Tuesday night in a Wessex League encounter at Gang Warily.
