Fleet Town 3 Whitchurch United 1.
Basingstoke Senior Cup.
Whitchurch bowed out of the Basingstoke Senior Cup on Tuesday, going down 3-1 to Southern League Division One Central Fleet Town.
Manager Jim Macey drafted in Paul Coventry, Isaac Sedu and Nick Jupp but the home side dominated the first 20 minutes as a much changed ‘Church were forced deep and their pace and movement caused no end of problems.
But once Sam Argent found space to blast over from five yards, his side escaped the shackles and were on top for the rest of the half.
Fleet took the lead on the hour when former Lion Mark Vockins struck a free-kick past Alex Thompson then 15 minutes later John Symons’ glancing header seemed to settle the tie. Ali Brown then found Argent who turned and volleyed home to give his side a glimmer of hope but it lasted no more than a minute as a low cross was not cleared and Lee Rumbold made it 3-1.
Tomorrow Whitchurch have a home Wessex League clash with Amesbury Town then on Tuesday they are home again to Andover Lions in the Andover Open Cup.
