Street stay bottom after defeat at Laverstock
Laverstock and Ford 4 Andover New Street 0.
New Street boss Matt Styles was realistic after his side’s latest league defeat, a 4-0 loss at Laverstock and Ford on Saturday which leaves them rooted at the foot of the Wessex League Division One still looking for their first point.
“I had 17 registered players missing for various reasons on Saturday including the whole of the back four who played against Andover Town on Thursday in the Hampshire Senior Cup.” he said adding ruefully “but around ten of them will be available for the game at Stockbridge.”
The North Hants Senior Cup tie at the Recreation Ground has been brought forward as original league opponents US Portsmouth and Laverstock and Ford are both in FA Vase action, a competition which, sadly, neither entered.
“At this level no player can be made to play as they are not paid but it is frustrating when the commitment is not there.” said Styles.
He admitted the result at Laverstock was a setback adding: “We were poor and not at the races and all their goals came from wide after we could not track their midfield runners.”
Tom Mundy, former Lion Paul Gulliver, Rob Gallagher and James Clifton scored twice in each half for the home side who were ahead inside five minutes and rarely threatened.
“Prince (Xamela) had a good game and they didn’t really know how to handle him and young Sam Holloway in goal could not be faulted and at the back Tommy Gentleman and Matt Davies did well.”
New signing Callum Sweeney played the full 90 minutes having not played competitive football for some while but Styles is hoping that the local derby atmosphere will again bring out the best in his squad.
“We have a number of ex-Stockbridge players here and I would hope they would all be keen to show what they can do.
“We proved we can complete on Thursday and we have to prove it every week to get off the bottom of the league.”
Friday's match kicks-off at 7.45pm
