Robins go down to heavy home defeat
Stockbridge 0 Cowes Sports 3.
Stockbridge went down to a surprise heavy defeat at the hands of Cowes Sports on Saturday.
Joint managers Terry Chapman and James Banks were on hand to see the Yachtsmen soundly thrashed at Whitchurch in the League Cup in the week but the vistors were a different proposition at the weekend.
The Robins started brightly and were first to create chances, Matt Freemantle heading over from a corner before Daryl Phillips shot wide of Ed Hatt’s goal.
Jordan Browne then set up Darren Williams whose shot was straight at Adam Smith in the home goal.
Stockbridge then caught Cowes with a quick break, but once again Phillips’ shot flew over the bar.
Having weathered the early storm from the home side, the Islanders began to find their feet and Danny Hatcher shot was saved before Darren Williams saw his goalbound effort cleared off the line.
Jordan Browne then tested Smith who tipped his shot over the bar for a corner. With neither side having found the vital breakthrough in the first half, it took Cowes just two minutes into the second period to find the net when Hatcher and Wilson combined well to set up Browne who tucked the ball past Smith’s left.
Smith got down low to his left to save from Hatcher as Cowes began to dominate then just past the hour Freemantle charged across to tackle and appeared to take the ball, but referee Paul Davies pointed to the spot and Hatcher doubled the Yachtsmens lead.
Home captain Chris Knight was booked for a rash challenge on Hatcher befoe with eight minutes remaining Browne made it bthree with a cool finish.
Totton and Eling have been thrown out of the Hamphsire Senior Cup for playing an unregistered player and so on Tuesday Stockbridge play Bournemouth Poppies in the second round at home instead.
